‘I knew instantly that we had to come’

FORT WORTH, Texas—Bill and Ranell Fonty were celebrating their ninth anniversary of when they first met and decided to memorialize the event by attending the Shen Yun Performing Arts showcase at the Bass Performance Hall on Thursday, Aug. 5.
Mr. Fonty manages the distribution center for the Texas Valve and Fitting company, and Mrs. Fonty is a computer programmer for a helicopter company. They have been married five years.
Mr. Fonty said after receiving a flier in the mail advertising the show, he knew instinctively to surprise his wife and bought tickets. “I knew instantly that we had to come. It was very good—excellent. It was very pure and very clean. I enjoyed watching it … I really enjoyed it.”
He also enjoyed all the detail of the performance and the feelings conveyed.
“The colors and the purity of the dance, the way it flows and moves. ... More feeling, more emphasis in the facial structure and expressions. You really see the story without words. It's very good,” he said.
Mrs. Fonty agreed her husband's gift was well chosen. She found the show amazing, enjoying many aspects of the performance.
“It's a combination of all of it. I enjoyed the theatrical, the expressions, the stories, and just the beauty of the dance.”
She hadn’t known what to expect prior to seeing the show but said, “It was just fantastic. Even the orchestra did a wonderful job. It was excellent."
A standout quality of the Shen Yun performance is the large, unique 3-D backdrops that are incorporated into each scene, something Mr. Fonty enjoyed.
“The very first backdrop they had, where they had movement in there. I thought that was very interesting how they did that, but then it worked perfectly with the dance, with the storyline.
The couple said that they would definitely come again when Shen Yun returns to Texas next year.

Also in the audience were Maria Stevens, a nurse, who has admired dance and ballet since she was very young and was amazed to see Shen Yun’s performance. She says she is amazed by the skill of Shen Yun’s dancers.
“I think it’s totally incredible. It talks so much about the culture and the emotion in the culture. I am just fascinated by it. It’s totally incredible. Very moving,” she said.
Tamica Holmes, a pharmacist, highly recommends the show. She believes that it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Shen Yun.
“It was very wonderful. Definitely worth the money, I would definitely tell them it’s a must see. Even if they’re not into the arts, it’s definitely something that’s once in a lifetime. Definitely something that’s worth seeing.”
A lawyer came to see the show with his wife and friends. They frequently go to the opera and watch ballet and he found Shen Yun’s performance to be top notch.
He said that he believes Shen Yun is reviving the old traditions of theater with its background and stage design. It’s not a show you can find anywhere in the world. Shen Yun is very unique and high quality, he said.
