SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—Loan Nguyen and her friend Thomas said they were enjoying the performance by the Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company on Wednesday, July 21, being staged at the San José Center for the Performing Arts. During intermission they talked about the show.
Thomas has a doctorate in Satellite Imagery and also teaches. He said he was enjoying the show, specifically from the visual and audio aspect. "It's just fun stuff," he said. Loan, who is in finance, was also enjoying the show and said, "I just mentioned to my friend here about the message we got from the two songs that the sopranos did, and it truly supports the movement and the ideology behind it. I pretty much share the same spirit and same belief, so I was extremely moved by what I have seen so far—it's a great performance!"
'It makes me feel good'
John Fulton, a manager for Berkeley Farms, and his wife Tessie, also spoke enthusiastically about the performance. John said, "I think it's very graceful, enthralling—I can't take my eyes off it—it's great! It makes me feel good."
Tessie mentioned the dancers' grace, the colorful costumes, and she liked "the way the emcees interact with the audience. The way they translate—speak their language, then they speak it in English—that's great." She also praised the singers saying their voices were very beautiful.
The emcee explained that the tumbling and other moves that we recognize in these dances weren't taken from other disciplines and added to dancing, instead they were originally part of classical Chinese dance and from there the movements spread to other disciplines. John liked the movements and connected with it. "It is very nice," he said.
'Really impressive'
Ben Reese, a lawyer, came because his son was interested in seeing the show. His response was clear: "Beautiful. Wonderful." His son, Benjamin, a store manager, had seen Shen Yun promoted in the past but couldn't come the last few years, so this time they came. He said it was even more than he had expected. "It's really impressive. All of it's been really good, I like it a lot."
Carol, the mother, also thought it was wonderful. "I enjoyed it. Very nice," she said.
