Japanese University Conference Brings Chinese Visitor to Silicon Valley Performance

SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—Ms. Yue, from Beijing, works in Japan in a university, and is here for a conference. A coworker told her about the show in San José and she and a colleague came to see it on Wednesday, July 21, at the SanJosé Center for the Performing Arts. She remarked, "The show was very good."

Commenting more specifically, she enjoyed "listening to the lyrics of the songs" and thought other ethnic groups would enjoy it. She explained, "Many of the dances are of different ethnic groups in China—mainland Chinese will like it, since it is an expression of ethnic togetherness."

Her colleague is Japanese. She asked, "Is this supported by [the] Chinese government?" The official website explains that the show is independent of the Chinese government, it is New York-based. These performers are the Shen Yun New York Company, one of three Shen Yun companies touring in the 2010 world tour.

Ms. Yue commented about how much she liked the dance In the Miao Village, "It expressed an Eastern grace that is imbued with deeper meanings of Eastern culture. The music and the dance were really good." She also liked the dance Flowing Silk and she said, "The men were very good as well. Like Wu Song Battles the Tiger."

Overall, she said, "It’s an art that brings everyone together."
