Retirees Recommend Everyone to See Shen Yun

SAN DIEGO—Shen Yun Performing Arts presented the second of three fantastic shows at the San Diego Civic Theatre on Wednesday night, July 14. The delighted audience was very responsive throughout the show and honored the New York-based artists gave a standing ovation.

According to its website, Shen Yun seeks to revive China’s 5,000-year-old artistic tradition, breathing new life into traditional Chinese culture while providing audiences everywhere with an experience of sublime beauty.

Through the universal languages of classical Chinese dance, music viewers of all ages and backgrounds are able to learn more about China’s ancient heritage. At intermission, a number of retired people in Wednesday night’s audience shared their excitement at seeing the show.

Walter Mantranga and his wife Ruth are both retired bankers and were delighted by Shen Yun. “So far, it's wonderful to see,” said Mr. Mantranga.

Mrs. Mantranga exclaimed, “Absolutely love it. I love the poetry that comes across.”

She continued in appreciation, saying, “The dancers are so talented. The movements are so precise. The synchronization is wonderful. And everyone up there looks like they could be a lead dancer. They're so good.”

Mrs. Mantranga loves singing and was very impressed by the eminent vocalists, exclaiming, “Oh my goodness, the tenor and soprano are just divine.”

She was particularly moved by the history behind China’s ancient culture and the story told by the performers. “Every move of the body tells a different piece of the story and I just absolutely love it,” she commented.

Mrs. Mantranga said they will definitely be back to see the show, saying, “It’s beautiful.”

She said everyone should come and see it, adding “If you haven't you must come see it.”

‘Just totally amazed’

Mike Calik and his wife also enjoyed the show immensely. Mr. Calik said he was “just totally amazed, intrigued and excited by the costumes and beautiful dance and music.”

He found every performance “more exciting than the last one” and thought the digital backdrops were excellent as they added “so much more meaning” to the stories told by the dancers and helped him to picture the areas of China where the dances originate from.

The state-of-the-art backdrops are designed to match the dancers’ costumes and choreography, adding another artistic dimension to the show. Viewers are transported across China’s diversely beautiful landscape, from the steppes of Mongolia to the Tibetan Himalayas and even beyond to heavenly realms.

“I'm just happy we came and just happy to share this with you,” Mr. Calik concluded.

 ‘Very incredible’

Retired Canon employee Kevin Oeding attended Shen Yun with his wife Sunny who is a housewife. The couple found the performance very interesting.

Mr. Oeding described it as extremely colorful and enjoyed learning more about traditional China and the countries different ethnicities.

He also appreciated the animated backdrops. “It really adds a lot to the show. They're very colorful and you get to see the different regions. It kind of helps you picture what they're all about and where they're from.”

Mrs. Oeding was particularly pleased to see Shen Yun because she missed seeing it in the past.

“Either they're here, I'm there or I'm there and they're here. So this time I finally made it and I enjoy so much,” she said.

Mrs. Oeding was impressed by the dancers’ “every move” and the stories of Chinese culture. “It's just very incredible,” she commented.
