Filmmaker’s Jaw Drops for Shen Yun

LOS ANGELES—Filmmakers Bobby Leigh and Marta Tomkiw attended the second evening performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on July 9.
Mr. Leigh has worked in the music and entertainment field for more than 20 years. Besides being a filmmaker, writer, and director, he is a producer. He produces documentaries, horror films, and reality TV shows.
“I thought it was amazing. I loved it, just absolutely loved it. I thought it was beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like this before and thought it was wonderful,” he said.
Mr. Leigh appreciated the Shen Yun Orchestra, saying, “I thought the orchestra was awesome! I loved the combination of the Western instruments and Chinese instruments. It was beautiful and sounded phenomenal.”
He added, “I had my jaw dropped for most of the show, I thought it was really amazing. I was leaning forward trying to get closer to the stage, it was wonderful, I just loved the whole thing—it was wonderful.”
Mr. Leigh thought the show was amazing and was really blown away. He said he loved the dance that depicted the persecution of the traditional spiritual practice, Falun Gong, in China today.
He said that he and his associate, Ms. Tomkiw, recently completed a documentary film about the Ukrainian genocide of 1932 where Joseph Stalin starved 10 million Ukrainian citizens to death in 17 months. He said they are interested in human rights issues.
Mr. Leigh wished Shen Yun well in their future performances. “It’s a great show and I cannot wait to see it again next year.” He said that he would absolutely recommend the show to his friends, saying, “We have friends in San Diego so we are going to send the word out next week.”
Ms. Tomkiw is also a filmmaker and works as a location manager on films and television shows.
She thought the show was “brilliant, fantastic.” “Some of the dance moves that the dancers made were amazing. Especially the women who did the standing splits. It was a group of very talented dancers and [an] amazing show.”
She said that the show has many messages, which are powerful and effective.
“It’s a very important show because it shows a message. Not only is it beautiful in artistry, dance, costume, and choreography, but it also shows a message, which is very important and I love the way it was done.”
Ms. Tomkiw was mesmerized by the music. She was “totally open to the experience” and listened to everything.
“It was beautiful—different instruments that are normally not in an orchestra that I would see, the Chinese instruments.” She loved the traditional Chinese two-stringed erhu. “I loved the [erhu]; that was a beautiful, beautiful piece.”
She said, “I liked when the divine entities came down the screen, off the stage, and back up.”
She also liked that the two emcees introduced each performance.
“I liked it when she spoke Chinese and he spoke English, and then he spoke Chinese and she spoke English, they went back and forth like that, and they were good together.”
Ms. Tomkiw said about the singers, “It was very uplifting and inspiring, very lofty, and lifts you up to a higher ground. Very good.”
She thought all the costumes were beautiful, and their colors. She loved the dance with the Chinese silver jewelry, In a Miao Village, saying, “That was phenomenal. And then the long sleeves [Flowing Silk], you lost yourself in the colors. It was brilliant. A really, really great show. It was a phenomenal show, I highly, highly recommend it to everybody. It’s a must see.”
