Shen Yun Amazes Family of Veteran Actors, Writers

LOS ANGELES—Two long-time actors and Oscar-nominated playwrights and their actress friend were in attendance at Shen Yun Performing Arts opening night at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on July 8. Joseph Bologna, along with his wife Renee Taylor and future daughter-in-law Cheryl Cosenza, joined the celebrity-filled audience.

Ms. Taylor, who has more than 50 years experience in acting, loved the show.

“It’s impossible what they do. It’s impossible. It’s possible, but it’s impossible,” she said.

Ms. Taylor thought that it was amazing how the dancers move together at the same time with such precision. “To me it’s incredible how they can stretch their bodies,” she added.

She said it was beautiful—the extensions, the jumps, and the turns. She thought the performers seemed to be in their twenties, and noted that they must have started very, very young to be able to do these movements.

The digital backdrops brought tears to Ms. Taylor. She had one word for it: “exquisite.”

Ms. Taylor thought the production value of the show was wonderful. She said she was impressed by “just the beauty—the beauty of the dances, the beauty of the people, the passion of the people, and the music is so sweet, so sweet.”

She added, “I am going to tell all my friends to come and see this. I loved it all. I loved it all. It’s like poetry. The dance is like poetry.”

Ms. Taylor introduced her future daughter-in-law, Cheryl Cosenza. Ms. Cosenza has been acting and dancing since she was a child. She currently works as an actress and model.

“I always studied dance and it is something that I love. I love to dance. I’ve been in many dance performances. The coordination and the talent behind the dancing, it’s just beautiful. I used to study ballet in New York. It’s just beautiful the way that they brought this to life.”

Ms. Cosenza said that that the real excitement behind the performance for her was the coordination of the flipping and the jumping with the dance. “That brings it to life a little more. You feel it with the music.” She added, “the costumes are outrageous.”

Ms. Cosenza, who travels between New York and Los Angeles for her film work, said that when she was in school, she used to be a cheerleader. She did a lot of dance and flipping. “It was such a great way to express yourself. I always expressed myself through acting and through dance and they go hand-in-hand with each other.”

Ms. Cosenza, an aficionado of shows mostly in New York, also said she loved the performance.

She said, “I have to say that this is absolutely brilliant. The way they brought it to life, the scenery, the backdrops are amazing. They really help with the music. You really feel every single act.”

Like many other members of the audience, Ms. Cosenza found the show inspiring.

“The colors are very inspirational. The backdrops with the colors and the feeling behind the music—the music is very powerful. Absolutely powerful,” she said. “They really choreographed this well. It’s overwhelming.”

Ms. Cosenza, who just finished a project yesterday for television, does print ads and had a 50-foot billboard in New York. She said that she does everything, but her career focus is strictly acting for TV and film.

As for the show inspiring her career, she said, “I think that anything that inspires me in a day helps me to be creative the next day.”

Ms. Taylor introduced her husband, veteran writer, actor, and director Joseph Bologna.

Mr. Bologna said the show was wonderful. “I love it,” he said, adding that they are “very talented dancers.”

“It’s all great. It’s all very entertaining,” said Mr. Bologna.

Ms. Taylor and Mr. Bologna have been married 45 years, and have worked together for about 43 years in show business. Ms. Taylor added, “We like each other. We love each other and we like each other.” Their writing partnership almost brought them an Oscar for their work on a screenplay in 1970.

The couple heard about the show from a press agent friend of theirs. He told them “you have to come see this.”
