Museum of Cultural Arts Executive Director: Shen Yun is ‘Awe inspiring’

HOUSTON— Reginald Adams, executive director for the Museum of Cultural Arts in Houston saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on the opening night at the Wortham Center’s Brown Theater on Friday, July 2.

The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic audience who provided the artists with a standing ovation at the end of the show.

Mr. Adams is best known for his brilliantly colored tile mosaic murals, sculptures and other art projects, and over the past seven years, he has become one of Houston’s most prolific public artists having designed, coordinated, managed, and produced over 80 public art projects across the city.

He said that Shen Yun was "one of the best expressions of creativity" that he had ever seen. “The colors and the combinations and the choreography was absolutely divine. I loved it.”

Continuing, he explained that as an artist he had “an appreciation for the bold colors, the movement, the coordination of the colors with the backdrop-it was absolutely a wonderful combination of art and creativity.

“I was very inspired ... I'll go home with ideas in my own mind to create my own works of art, having seen the dancers perform for us tonight.”

Mr. Adams said, “I think what's most inspiring, is the culture … and you know, the beauty of the artwork, transcends the entire world.

“So it reaches me very deeply to know that tonight I was able to experience some dances and stories that I never knew before, and somehow I know that the influence will come out in my own artwork and I look forward to seeing how that happens in the future.”

Shen Yun is a New York-based company consisting mainly of ethnic Chinese dancers, and according to its website, it focuses on the authentic cultural heritage of classical China.

Mr. Adams did research online about Shen Yun after hearing about it, and he could not wait to experience it in real life. He said, “I was very excited tonight to be able to see it for my own eyes. It's one thing to see the beauty on video or in photographs, but to see the performances live, it was awe-inspiring.”

There were so many parts that touched him, particularly the dance In a Miao Village. "I could resonate with the sounds in that performance, I think that was my most favorite. I loved that one the most, but they were all wonderful.”

In summing up, he said, “I will go home and tell all of my friends that they must not miss tomorrow's performance. In fact, tonight, as soon as I leave, I'm going to get on my Facebook and let them know how wonderful a time I had. It's wonderful.”
