LODZ, Poland—Maksymilian Hac was amidst the captivated audience at Lodz's Great Theatre last night, June 15, when Shen Yun Performing Arts put on their second performance, presenting China's ancient culture through the universal language of classical Chinese dance and music.
Mr. Hac is a professional dancer and became a national celebrity when he starred as a contestant on the fourth series of the Polish television show, You Can Dance.
Every year, Shen Yun premieres new songs and dances accompanied by the Shen Yun Orchestra with its unique combination of Western and Chinese instruments.
Clearly impressed by the New York-based dancers, Mr. Hac said, "I'm sitting here, and the whole time I have a smile on my face."
The show encompasses rich techniques and ancient legends from China's millennia-old heritage through to distinctive ethnic pieces and story-based dances with an uplifting message that people can still learn from today.
Mr. Hac mentioned an aspect of the dancing that had caught his attention, saying, "Here [in Shen Yun] there's more dynamic movement … simple movements, performed by a group of 20 people with the appropriate musical accompaniment, make a huge impression."
He also appreciated the solo performances, commenting, "When I heard the vocal soloists or the erhu player, I closed my eyes, and could sense how the audience is breathing, the stillness in the room."
The erhu is a fretless two-stringed instrument with a diverse range of sound that touches the hearts of many listeners.
When asked to described the show in a few words, Mr. Hac replied that it was "gratifying to the senses".
