HONOLULU, Hawaii—As Shen Yun Performing Arts farewells Hawaii, a unique experience of China's ancient culture will stay with audiences for a long time to come. The New York-based performers share ancient legends and contemporary stories spanning 5,000 years of China's rich history through classical Chinese dance and music.
Major Jeff Powell is an officer in the U.S. Army who attended the show with his wife on Sunday, June 6.
Major Powell had never seen Shen Yun before and was very impressed, exclaiming, "It was very good. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was amazing."
He appreciated learning about Chinese culture and was hard pressed to choose a favourite aspect, commenting, "I guess all of it—the music, the dancing, the energy. It was all very good.”
He particularly enjoyed Fairies of the Clouds, a piece in which ladies dance with fans made of white feathers to symbolise clouds as they gracefully float through their eternal home in the sky.
Major Powell felt the show was unique, adding, "It was a very educational experience. It's a lot of fun.”
He enjoyed the show for several reasons, saying, "The music was great. The stories were really interesting and they were very good. I thought that the singing was amazing—I have a little bit of background in music so I’d never heard Chinese sung like that. To me that was one of the most amazing things. "
Major Powell himself used to sing as an amateur so he enjoyed the operatic pieces, saying, "To hear the Chinese language sung in an operatic type tone, I’d never heard that. It was very good."
