'So inspiring to see movements that reached for the heavens'

Honolulu, HAWAII—Shen Yun Performing Arts played to a mesmerized audience at the Concert Hall at the Neal Blaisdell Center on June 5.
Shen Yun is a global sensation which is establishing a new standard for the performing arts. The dancers make the precise and challenging art of ancient, traditional Chinese dance flow magically during their vignettes, building a historical overview of China which reaches into our contemporary times.
Kathryn Moerke was among the audience who attended the Saturday evening performance.
Ms. Moerke studied classical and modern dance in New York City. She is now physically unable to perform so instead attends dance performances.
Her life has been wonderfully saturated with exposure to the arts. She worked a few years for the Metropolitan Museum and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts so she had a "wonderful art life."
Brimming with enthusiasm, she recounted her impressions of tonight's performance, "It was absolutely beautiful, absolutely gorgeous. "
Ms. Moerke has a unique understanding of the Chinese history being portrayed on stage. This understanding was brought to her years ago by her sister-in-law. The sister-in-law was a member of a very ancient, aristocratic Chinese family lineage. The family had lived in China's Forbidden City and had to escape the palace and flee for their lives during the cultural revolution, which was part of the communist take-over of mainland China.
Shen Yun gave Ms. Moerke a personal experience of her sister-in-law's world, and this was very important to her, "They were the nobles. So this especially was meaningful to me to see the costumes and everything else of the nobility in China. My sister-in-law looked like one of the princesses on stage. She was just beautiful."
A unique element of Shen Yun's performance stood out for her, "What I loved about it, among other things, the color, but the spirituality of the movement, I loved."
"Here in Western dance there's so much earthiness, and I have to say quite honestly so much vulgarity, in our contemporary dance. It was so inspiring to see movements that reached for the heavens," she said.
"It was so spiritual, in the movements. Which of course, were very ancient, but I love that , the human beings feels very spiritual when they are reaching up high and when they're doing these fabulous leaps towards the heavens. I love especially, the spirituality of the movement."
In closing Ms. Moerke reiterated, "I thought it was absolutely stunning! I loved it!"
Shen Yun Performing Arts will perform one more shows in Honolulu at the Blaisdell Concert Hall at 2.00pm on Sunday June 6. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
